Charles “Kim” Coit, Esq.

Charles “Kim” Coit graduated from Boston College Law school in 1971. He practiced law in Boston for 5 years before moving to Maine to be the Director of the Center for Real Estate Education at the University of Southern Maine and Assistant Professor of Real Estate Finance. After 10 years at the University, he returned to the private sector as Vice President of Mark Stimson Associates (Maine’s then largest real estate agency with 150 +/- sales associates) to be Director of Training and compliance officer. In 1998, he was president of the Maine Association of REALTORS. He was chairman of the Maine Association of REALTORS Contract Review Committee which developed and now updates annually, transaction forms used widely by real estate companies statewide. He currently consults with various real estate agencies, continues his love of education through his teaching and writing. He founded Shipley Publishing where he publishes real estate text books for pre-licensing and continuing education courses.





Kate Kerkam

Kate Kerkam has been licensed as an attorney in Maine since 2006 and is now also a real estate sales agent at RE/Max Shoreline Realty in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. After clerking for the Maine Supreme Judicial Court and working at a Portland law firm, Kate taught legal research and writing at the University of Maine School of Law as an adjunct faculty member. As a litigator, she has seen what happens when real estate transactions go wrong, so she works with her real estate clients and students to make sure they can avoid these same pitfalls. Kate brings an exceptional level of expertise to her teaching role for the Center for Real Estate Studies.





Tom Coward, Esq.

Tom Coward has been licensed as a lawyer in Maine since 1981, and became a Maine real estate licensee in 2005. He has been involved in hundreds of real estate transactions, either as an attorney or as a broker. Beginning in 2012 he spent 4 years supervising several hundred agents as Designated Broker of Keller Williams Realty, one of Maine’s largest real estate companies. Currently, he divides his time between his law practice, actively representing buyers and sellers as part of the Tru Brit Realty Group, and occasionally acting as a consultant and expert witness in broker liability lawsuits. Students appreciate the wealth of experience and real-life examples he brings to his teaching.





Kit Foster

Kit Foster is a native of Maine and has extensive experience in the real estate industry. Kit graduated from USM and began a teaching career at Fryeburg Academy. A summer job selling real estate quickly became his passion and he left teaching to go fulltime in real estate. He went from selling real estate to owning his own company, and eventually became a co-owner in ERA of Maine. He has served on local planning boards and is experienced in residential and commercial development. Kit was a national trainer and has taught thousands of agents throughout the country but now focuses on his home state of Maine where he is well known and a highly respected instructor. With over 35 years of experience in the industry, Kit is an exceptional hands-on instructor who prides himself in his professional and personal teaching technique while keeping classes entertaining and interesting.





Charlene Hamiwka, Senior Vice President and Broker

Charlene brings a unique blend of sales, marketing and consulting skills to the Center for Real Estate Studies As a former vice president of high tech companies, her experience in business, particularly in contract negotiation, as well as her technology skills, gives her a definite edge when it working with her clients and students.

Charlene has a passion for real estate and has purchased and renovated several properties. In 2009, she decided to pursue her interest full-time. After joining and then managing a local real estate franchise, she was recruited by Legacy Properties Sotheby’s International Realty in 2012. Although Charlene has been instrumental in developing the online presence and courses for CRES, her main focus is still as a full time real estate broker. She is usually in the top 10% of all agents in terms of sales and the top 1% in terms of average listing and selling price.

She has experience in both residential and commercial real estate. She holds an undergraduate degree in Biology and an M.S. in Computer Science/Software Engineering.
